COACH’S CORNER: Issue 3
with Dr. David Greisler
Advice is cheap … especially bad advice. To be effective in today’s market, we must replace misguided advice with better counsel and sharper thinking.
In the last two issues of the Home Remedies newsletter, we began debunking eight flawed axioms drawn from the worst advice we have received across our years in business. Unlearning these misguided axioms will free you from ‘disinformation prisons’ …. and that will accelerate both your personal development and business advancement.
To this point, the issues we’ve thus far dismissed as amateurish advice are:
- “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The point … “If it ain’t broke, make it better!” The market will applaud you.
- “Do more with less.” The point … focus on the ‘critical few’ issues in your business. After clearly hearing the voice of the customer, consider doing less with less. Sustainable pace should follow.
The third issue that we’ll dispel is the oft heard phrase, “Change takes time.” Our observation is that when there’s no clear deadline in tandem with focused accountability, change occurs too slowly and is replete with incrementalism. As author Gary Hamel makes clear, there are only two kinds of companies in the competitive world of today: The “laggards” who wait and fall behind the change curve, and the ‘”challengers” who commit themselves to act and get in front of the change curve.
As we reflect on the meaning of Hamel’s observation, the essence of competitive success is commitment. (NOTE: a complete reading of Hamel’s work clearly conveys that wise corporate strategy is an essential precursor to thriving in the market). With the advent of inexpensive information systems, streamlined supply chains, and hyper-competition, time, distance, and space, as we’ve known them, have become illusions. For example, it’s too difficult and too slow to try to ‘get there from here.’ Conversely, it is essential to understand that you can get ‘here from there.’ In other words, leaders counterintuitively must leap forward to decide where they should go, then jump backward to work toward that goal. Through this ‘leap out then plan back’ method of business development, one is better able to understand both the timing and resources needed today to keep the organization moving toward a successful tomorrow.
It is vital to create both a deep sense of restlessness with the status quo and commitment to a future vision or current organizational success will be fleeting.

We would like to extend an invitation for you to
tour the Parade of Homes. This year we will have two Whole House Remodeling projects open to walk through and experience, the Alder House and the Lynbrook. Both are as unique and exciting as the Clients who own them.
The Alder House
Before and after pics
- A tired sunroom and deck was removed from the rear of the home to make way for a new 2-story addition consisting of an expanded kitchen on the first floor and an expanded master suite on the second floor.
- New Andersen windows were installed to match the existing home.
- The old everyday siding was removed from the entire house and was replaced with new vinyl shingle style siding blended with new vinyl board and batten style to give an exciting fresh new feel.
- The front entry and garage doors were replaced to enhance the curb appeal.
- Inside the first floor, the rear of the home was opened and a steel beam installed to support the floors above. This beam is hidden in the ceiling to give a seamless feel of always being a wide open space.
- The Kitchen features custom cabinetry with quartz counters and tile backsplash. Professional Grade Appliances are installed including a 36” Wolf Range.
- A brick veneer wall the Homeowner installed was expanded over the arched doorway between the living room and kitchen.
- A 16’ Andersen Frenchwood Sliding door was installed to bring the outside in and leads to a new paver patio.
- Off the kitchen is a cozy patio and grilling area we salvaged and covered with a custom built pergola and is enclosed by a stone wall constructed by the Homeowner.
- New field finished walnut flooring was installed through the first floor to accent the tile floors installed by the Homeowner.
- New interior doors and trimwork were installed throughout the first and second floors.
- Leading to the Second floor is a new staircase featuring a custom railing in with iron balusters.
- New field finished oak flooring was installed through out the second floor. A new master bath was installed with custom cabinetry with an Art Dec flair and a curbless walk-in shower.
- Curved walls turn into a contemporary gas fireplace feature in the newly expanded master bedroom.
- Fresh paint throughout the entire home.
The Lynbrook House
A California Ranch in need of updating.
Before and after pics
- The exterior originally had a vertical wood siding installed on the center and left wings of the home. This was replaced with new drystack veneer stone on the center front and rear of the home, complimented by a vinyl board and batten style siding on the left wing of the home. The original brick was left in tact on the right wing of the residence as it flowed well with the other materials used and the overall look of the home.
- Existing redwood timbers run from the rear roof overhangs, through the house, and to the front roof overhangs. They were refinished by the homeowner along with the front porch columns. Recessed lighting was installed in the roof overhangs in the front and rear to light up walk spaces and accent the stone veneer.
- All of the windows and exterior doors were replaced with new energy efficient ones.
- An addition was constructed on the front of the detached garage. The front was faced in the drystack stone to match the home and new board and batten siding was installed on the rest of the garage.
- The plain front entry was replaced by leaded glass double doors in a mahogany finish and given a new tile landing on the inside.
- The right wing of the home is the bedroom wing where we replaced all the interior doors, trim and carpeting. The original master suite is now the guest suite with a completely renovated full bath.
- The center section of the home is where the living room, family room, dining room and kitchen are located.
- The living room fireplace was faced in drystack veneer stone to match the center exterior of the home.
- A new mantel was installed and finished to match the refinished redwood beam running along the ridge of the high cathedral ceilings.
- A wall was removed between the dining room and living room to create an open feel.
- A niche was built into a wall in the dining room with glass display shelves and accent lighting.
- The kitchen was redesigned featuring Medallion Cabinetry, quartz tops and a tumbled slate backsplash. A new tile floor and appliances complete the space. The left wing of the home is the location of the powder room, laundry facility and the new Master Suite.
- A high wainscot detailing is the feature of the powder room, doubling as the pool changing room there are numerous hooks to hang wet towels and suits. The laundry facility was equipped with a new front loading washer and dryer. A new counter was installed over the machines for increased work space and folding laundry. Some cabinetry was salvaged from the old kitchen, cleaned up and used in the laundry space for overflow storage.
- Once the original garage, then an in-law quarters, now the new Master Suite boasts a walk-in closet with custom shelving system along with a master bath featuring an oversized walk-in shower.
- All new paint throughout the home was performed by the homeowner.
